*Spoilers alert – proceed with caution* (Read in January 2022).
To begin, OBVIOUSLY, we must address the insanity of Lu being infatuated with a COMPLETE stranger for so long. I can totally relate to having a passing crush on a stranger at a bus stop, but the fact it seems like a constant all-consuming fixation on a man for twelve months whom to she didn’t even say a word, was very serial killer-y.
After a whole year of Lu obsessing over Bus Stop Guy and Sarah never asks about him again?
Lu’s supposed dream job is writing but we never hear about her writing. She should be writing an article daily and blogging. Especially in 2008-2012.
Lu says her dad and Oscar can’t find a common interest to discuss, but she never seemed to try to think of one to mention to help them ease the flow of conversation.
Sarah and Jack’s breakup was obviously overdue. I thought that they didn’t try hard enough. The pair didn’t seem to talk about it or try to fix things. For instance, they could’ve seen a couple’s counsellor. Until, however, the line about their relationship having been hard work. So I felt that maybe they did attempt working on their relationship outside of the scenes we saw. It would have been good to hear more about them trying to mend it, but maybe they just weren’t a good match. We really didn’t see much of them and didn’t hear enough about their relationship to want to cheer them on as it was.
The whole book was quite surface-level actually…
On top of Sarah and Jack, I don’t think we see enough of Lu and jack together to really understand why she’s so in love with him either! What do they have in common? The only scene that gives insight is the Grease-themed day.
Again, we don’t see any conversations about Lu and Oscar’s future, nor conversations about his awful mother. Surely, they would have discussed all of this and worked on him defending Lu to his mother. If not, this should have been more of a fight or accentuated their incompatibility. AND trying for a baby when your partner lives in another country and doesn’t have a plan yet… yikesss!
They really gloss over everything.
And why would you give your sister’s pendant to Sarah wtf? It was a nice gesture but surely you’d want to wear it constantly.
They’re all so dumb.
Was fun to read though.
